Birthday in Africa

When everyone asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, I nearly got teary eyed when I said that I wanted to have dinner with all my friends and go out dancing, because I miss those so much here in West Africa. God knew, though, that I needed that outlet, and made a way for it to happen – and more!

Thursday night, Rod, Angelika, the Bouake Bunch (Jamie, Steph, Chazz, and Devin) and I piled into the Land Cruiser with our laptops in tow to have dinner and downloads at Black…

We Have Moved into Our Ivorian Families

Our new home is interconnected with a couple of other houses and courtyards in an African apartment complex. The floor and walls function as a continuous concrete “u” that is open to the hot sun. A hallway leads back to a series of metal doorways breaking an otherwise continuous concrete wall about eight feet high. These doors open into small household courtyards for each family. Ours is the first courtyard and you have to carefully creak through a door without a bottom hinge. The courtyard is… Continue

Walking Home on Sunday....

Today after spending about 3 hours at Black and White (a fancy

restaurant downtown with wifi) online, I decided to head back home.

Someone from my campus had shown up while I was there, but he was not

leaving for another hour, so I decided to strike out on my own. As I

left, I greeted the owner of the restaurant, and as he showed me out

the door, he asked if I was going home on foot. I said that I didn’t

have my car with me, so I would likely get a moto taxi. He scoffed… Continue

Dear Friends and Family,

Today I write you with the joy of recovery. More details can be found in my blog regarding my January 6th accident and stages of healing, but more importantly we must give God glory for His protection during the accident, His provision of health care in West Africa, and His power to heal. The photo to the left is of Heidi and me on the Niger River in Bamako, Mali (14 hours from our home). Although the trip was spent in pain seeking… Continue

Into Iviorian Families We Go

A large portion of my last blog related the story of being introduced to the intricate network of the bike industry in Bouaké. Chazz and I have been back to M. Mobson several times since then to buy replacement parts for the bicycles on campus and each time he has graciously received us and we have talked for a while. Because of this established relationship it was significantly easier to then go to him on January 24 and buy two sweet single speed African work bikes. Sweet does not imply… Continue

Orientation Week in Korhogo

Greetings once again from Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire. Yesterday we said goodbye to 6 of our Journey Corps volunteers in Korhogo as they loaded up their bags and bikes to head out to their homes for the next few months. After 3 days of orientation during which we sat with pastors and host families talking about what each one could expect, it was time to head out. It was not easy for me to see these great kids load up and leave. They are entering a world that will have a profound effect on their…
