Not that this is all that encouraging to those of you who are in the process of raising funds. In a sermon I preached a while back I unpacked this idea based upon Paul's prayer in Colossians 1.9 to know the will of God:

I think the best motive to do missions is the Gospel. Not just bringing the gospel to others but letting it function in your own heart. As the good of salvation works in your heart it will compel you to share that good with others. I think physical obedience is never a good enough motive to do right. God commands the impossible of us, to obey out of a heart of love and compassion. Do missions because God did missions for you. I know I am probably preaching to the Choir but you asked :)
