The CORPS

Summary:

Journey Corps is an opportunity for young adults to give one or two years of their life to serving in cross-cultural ministry. Participants (Journeyers) will be exposed to various types of ministry while they seek direction from God for their future. It is a season of intentionality where Journeyers are transformed by ministry for ministry. We offer things like; hands-on experience, mentors for the journey, living in community, over 65 years of missions experience, and practical and formal education.

History:

For more than 65 years, WorldVenture has been training national leaders around the world. Journey Corps is now leveraging this experience to equip the next generation kingdom workers. Two years ago, a concept paper was circulated to WorldVenture leadership outlining a service program that would allow young adults to be equipped to serve within a cross-cultural environment for up to two years, this was the beginning of Journey Corps!

Mission:

To see young adults' lives radically transformed for God's Kingdom by engaging in intentional community and cross-cultural ministry.

Lovers of Jesus:

The gospel of Jesus Christ is at the center of Journey Corps. The only thing of value that Journey Corps has to offer is Jesus. As each Journeyer cultivates a relationship with his or her Lord, they find their meaning, identity, strength, and hope in Him. They can then give that to others as they serve. What Jesus did on the cross is what changes people, whether that be believers growing in maturity or non-believers coming to know Him for the first time.

Life long learners:

Being a lifelong learner is important for any field of work. For Journey Corps, it will be a primary focus. Being learners requires a mentality of humility. One of the most powerful ways to serve in another culture is to be humble before the nationals and learn from them. We want each Journeyer to learn the culture by submitting to the local body of Christ. Lifelong learners, specifically cross-cultural learners, are constantly expanding their view of who God is. Being open to those paradigm shifts is part of the journey.

Servant Leaders:

Leadership and Influence. We want each Journeyer to learn to influence people with the gospel of Christ by serving them, which ties back to having an attitude of humility. Servant leaders seek to learn the real needs of people, not the perceived needs. They then meet those real needs with hearts of service.

Discover Calling

God has gifted every person in His body with specific strengths and has also placed a calling on their life (Eph. 2:10). We believe that if a person can capitalize on their strengths and serve where they're called, then they will be an unstoppable tool in God's hand. Not only will they be effective for God's kingdom, but they will be doing what they were designed for.

"So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them" (Rom 12:5-6).

Journey Corps' aim is to help people find their sweet spot. To find that sweet spot, we hope to provide an atmosphere of intentionality where Journeyers can ask God about where they fit in His plan. This intentional atmosphere is a place where many distractions are silenced and you learn to ask three questions

  • Who is God?

Christianity is about knowing someone not doing something. That someone is the God of the universe. Knowing Him well will shape how you respond to life and to the world.
  • Who am I?

  • Knowing who you are, how God made you, and what he thinks of you are the most important things to know before you do anything. If your actions come from a wrong understanding of any of those things they come from the wrong place.
  • What is my Role?

God is on a mission to redeem the world to himself. He has chosen to do that through his people (the church). By using imperfect people to do his perfect will he demonstrates how great He is. What is your part in God's mission?

Fall in Love with a People

As people live and serve we hope that they will fall in love with the country and the people. As Journeyers begin to grow in language and cultural understanding, they will begin to develop real relationships with nationals. Relationship is the foundation upon which ministry happens. We hope that as Journeyers will build real relationships with the people group they serve.

Gain Hands-on Experience

The many ministries that Journeyers will be exposed to will help them visualize their own involvement in different types of ministry. As each one discovers their particular passion for ministry they can focus more on gaining the practical skills needed to flourish in their future ministry.

Be a part of transforming US churches

As young adults come home or commit to long term missions they will affect their home churches with a passion for missions. Each Journeyer becomes a living demonstration of what it looks like to sacrifice for the sake of the gospel. Our hope is that demonstration will rub off on their home churches and motivate congregations to be about the Kingdom of God.

Christ Followers

If you are a Christ follower who has a heart to serve, Journey Corps is an option for you. It is our goal to facilitate a missional movement in our world by offering WorldVentures vast network of relationships to the next generation of kingdom workers. If you want to be a part of something God sized join what God is doing around the world.

Young Adults

We believe that if we are going to impact our world with the gospel we need do what Jesus told his deciples to do, "Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest (Matthew 9:37-38)." We need to find and equip the next generation of kingdom workers. Journey Corps is designed for young adults ages 18-28. Journeyers are willing to go use their gifts, talents, and hands to serve others for one to two years. Both single individuals and married couples are needed in this ministry. What could be done if every young christain adult gave a year of their life to serve God globally?

  • Single or Married without children (each spouse must be a full-time participant)

Why should you join a Journey Corps team?

Joining a program is far less weighty than Joining God’s mission. Journey Corps gives you a chance to be intentional about seeking God and finding what your role is in His plan. There is something truly powerful about seeking God inside a context different from your own.

This is not like any short-term missions trip you have been a part of. Journey Corps is not a program, its cross-cultural life. It is not just survival; it is full of the relationships that make life sweet like family and friends. Beyond the deep sense of community, you will have with your team new relationships form with people from across the globe in the country you will life. One Journeyer put it like this, “We have a history with them and we feel belonging here now (Naomi Smith).” Your journey begins as you embrace the unfamiliar until it is familiar just as Christ became one of us in order to reach us.

Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Are you ready to trust God to make you who he wants you to be? Are you ready to get serious about serving God with no strings attached? If not, don’t come.

The Practical

Community: The friendships you will build with your team will be your lifeline. You are not alone to process the challenges you face. Your team will meet often for encouragement, worship, and debriefing. Experiences and friendships bind Journey Corps teams together.

God’s Will: Finding God’s will for your life is more about learning to trust Him no matter what comes your way. Your journey will give you so many opportunities to trust God with your life and your future. Your journey across the world will help you be intentional about seeking God’s direction for the future. Everything you do will be filtered through these three questions. Who am I? Who is God? What is my role?

Change the World: There are so many needs around the world. What do you bring to the table? Most importantly you bring Christ who is the eternal solution to all our needs. You may also bring a skill, a trade, or a compassionate heart to love and serve others. If you want to change the world, it’s done through relationships. Jesus lived thirty years among us before starting his public ministry. Your journey will be more effective as you set aside your need to accomplish tasks and focus on relationships with people. The you will be able to change the world one friendship at a time..
